Foresters, Lady Spartans move up

The Wyoming Valley West girls and Forest City boys used victories over the leaders of their divisions to make moves in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Basketball Power Rankings that were released Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Spartans made the week’s biggest move within the rankings, gaining two spots in Big School girls. The Foresters made their first appearance in the Small School boys rankings.

The Nanticoke boys and Holy Redeemer girls also moved up this week. The Abington Heights and Western Wayne girls returned to the rankings while the Mid Valley girls made their first appearance.

All four No. 1 teams remained the same.

The Abington Heights boys and Scranton Prep remained on top of the Big Schools while the Holy Redeemer boys and Dunmore girls are still No. 1 among Small Schools.

The top four of Big School boys and top five of Small School boys, as well as the top two of each girls rankings are unchanged.

Abington Heights is followed by Dallas, Valley View and Pittston Area in Big School boys after those teams combined to go 11-0 during the week.

Nanticoke traded places with Hazleton Area taking over fifth and dropping the Cougars to sixth.

The Trojans gained ground despite splitting their two games. The loss was a six-point game at Holy Redeemer for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 lead.

Hazleton Area lost two out of three, one to No. 2 Dallas and the other to District 1’s Spring-Ford.

Holy Redeemer is still followed in Small School boys by Holy Cross, Mid Valley, Riverside and Old Forge.

The Royals, Crusaders and Spartans combined to go 7-0 for the week.

Riverside and Old Forge each split two games with Riverside’s loss coming to No. 3 Mid Valley.

Forest City took the sixth spot away from Blue Ridge by knocking off the Raiders and Lackawanna League Division 4’s other unbeaten, Montrose, to take sole possession of the division lead.

The Class A Foresters are just 7-6, but all six losses were to teams Class 3A or larger and three were to ranked teams. They started the week by handing Blue Ridge just its second loss overall.

Seven of the eight girls spots between No. 3 and No. 6 changed.

Pittston Area is still second to Scranton Prep in Big Schools and Lake-Lehman is second in Small Schools to Dunmore.

Scranton Prep won twice and had its Sunday trip to Philadelphia to play Plymouth-Whitemarsh called off because of weather.

Pittston Area, which had been the last unbeaten boys or girls team in the district, suffered its first loss, but held on to a share of first place in WVC Division and to second place in the rankings.

Wyoming Valley West, which defeated Pittston Area to tie up that race, jumped from fifth to third.

Wilkes-Barre Area won three times and remained in fourth.

Abington Heights won its two games by a total of 65 points to rejoin the rankings in fifth.

Hazleton Area lost two of three and dropped from third to sixth.

Dunmore won its two games and Lake-Lehman won three, including beating former No. 3 Montrose, to hold first and second among Small Schools.

Holy Redeemer won three times and moved up one spot into third, trading places with Montrose, which was beaten by Lake-Lehman after losing Aspen Smith, one of is team leaders, to a season-ending injury.

Mid Valley won two close games, one at the buzzer, to extend its winning streak to six and join the rankings in fifth.

Western Wayne improved to 6-8 against a primarily Big School schedule and rejoined the rankings in sixth.
