GOLF ROUNDUP: Leaders handle challenges, extend advantages

Defending champions Dallas, Montrose, Lackawanna Trail and Riverside all held off challenges from their nearest pursuers for key victories in high school golf divisional races Monday.

Dallas defeated second-place Pittston Area, 155-171, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 victory that clinched no worse than a tie for first place.

Montrose kept its perfect overall record intact by winning at Blue Ridge, 6-3, in Lackawanna League Division 4 in a match that clinched at least a tie for first.

Lackawanna Trail broke a first-place tie in Lackawanna Division 3 by winning a rematch of an early-season tie, 7-2, over Mid Valley.

Riverside widened its lead in Lackawanna Division 2 by defeating Dunmore, 6-3.

Logan Paczewski shot a 2-under-par, 34 at Irem Temple Country Club to lead Dallas (6-1) to its victory.

Kyle Langan added a 38. Max Steinruck’s 40 and Austin Finarelli’s 43 completed the team score.

Karl Pecha shot a 38 to lead the way for Pittston Area, which also got a 42 from Tyler Wassel.

Montrose improved to 6-0 in the division and 7-0 overall by handing second-place Blue Ridge its second loss. The Meteors have a two-match lead with two to play.

Lackawanna Trail swept all the points in the last two foursomes, clinching five of those six points before the eighth tee.

Gavin June and Brayden Jones teamed up in the second group, then Adam Jones and Michael Bluhm finished up.

Eddie Kaufman won in singles and better-ball for Mid Valley.

Riverside improved to 6-1 in the division and 7-2 overall while dropping to Dunmore to 4-2-2.

In other Lackawanna matches: Honesdale defeated Valley View, 5½-3½, and North Pocono downed Wallenpaupack, 7½-1½, in Division 1; Scranton beat Delaware Valley, 5½-3½, and West Scranton topped Holy Cross, 6-3, in Division 2; and Carbondale defeated Lakeland, 7-2, while Western Wayne was topping Old Forge, 5½-3½, in Division 3.

In other WVC matches: Wilkes-Barre defeated Tunkhannock, 165-190, in Division 1; Crestwood handled Berwick, 163-187, in Division 2; and MMI Prep defeated Nanticoke, 175-191, while Wyoming Seminary edged Wyoming Area, 188-193.

Owen Blazick shot a 2-over-par, 38 at Blue Ridge Trail and four teammates shot either 41 or 42 as Crestwood improved to 5-1.

GIRLS

Ciera Toomey shot a 37 on the back nine at Pine Hills Country Club to lead Dunmore to a 135-141 victory over Riverside.
