Hazleton Area shut out by Haverford in softball playoffs

Emma Taylor tossed a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts Monday as Haverford shut out Hazleton Area, 2-0, at Freedom Park in Drums in a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 6A first-round state softball tournament game.

Taylor, a junior who is already verbally committed to play at Yale University, walked three. She retired Hazleton Area 1-2-3 in the final two and three of the final four innings.

Julia Mrochko had the only hit for Hazleton Area, which reached the state championship game in 2019, the last time the tournament was conducted.

The Lady Cougars, the District 2-4 Subregional champions, had a four-game winning streak broken and had their season end with a 15-8 record.

Haverford scored both its runs in the third inning on a pair of two-out doubles.

Gabriela Terracino held them scoreless the rest of the way.
