Tyler Wolfe threw touchdown passes less than three minutes apart and the Hazleton Area defense limited host Williamsport to one touchdown Friday night as the Cougars clinched an outright Wyoming Valley Conference Class 6A/5A Division championship with a 14-11 victory.
Hazleton Area won its fourth straight and seventh in the last eight games to improve to 7-3. Williamsport, which went into the game with a chance to tie for the top spot, fell to 5-5.
The Hazleton Area touchdowns came at the end of the first quarter and start of the second.
Wolfe passed 6 yards to Matthew Buchman and 63 yards to Connor Shamany for a 14-0 lead.
Connor Poole’s 33-yard field goal for Williamsport made it 14-3 at halftime.
The Millionaires scored late in the third quarter when Frankie Morrone threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jamaire Harden and Nasir Hennigan ran for the two-pointer.
Hazleton Area protected the three-point lead the rest of the way to close out the victory.
