Imhotep, Neumann-Goretti romp

While District 2 teams sat idle, the rest of the state was active in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association basketball playoffs Tuesday night.

The weather issues that caused postponements for teams from the northeast were not present elsewhere, allowing for the filling of most of the quarterfinal lines on the six brackets scheduled to be contested Tuesday.

Quarterfinal opponents were determined for four of the District 2 teams, provided they can get through Wednesday’s second round.

Imhotep Charter and Neumann-Goretti, the top-ranked teams in Class 5A and 4A boys continued their impressive play and await the two District 2 champions.

A Wednesday win would send Abington Heights against Imhotep Charter Friday. Imhotep has beaten 2 state opponents by a total of 88 points, including Tuesday’s 68-32 romp over Muhlenberg to improve to 27-3.

There are nine teams left in Class 5A boys with just one second-round game to be played.

Scranton Prep can set up a meeting with Neumann-Goretti (24-3) with a Wednesday win. Neumann-Goretti handled Bethlehem Catholic, 74-49, and has beaten two state opponents by a total of 70 points.

The Valley View boys and Montrose girls also learned the opponents that are up next if they can win Wednesday.

Dunmore and Lake-Lehman have a chance to play each other Friday if they can both win Wednesday in Class 3A girls.

Valley View is trying to get into a Class 4A boys matchup with Uniontown (22-5). Uniontown, the sixth-place team from District 7, defeated Littlestown, 67-46.

The Montrose girls are trying to get into a game with District 1 champion Faith Christian Academy (21-6). Faith Christian defeated South Williamsport, 35-28.
