Jewell helps Cougars remain tied

Taheed Jewell scored 17 points as part of a strong all-around game Friday night as Valley View held on to its share of the Lackawanna League Division 1 boys basketball lead by running away in the second half for a 54-34 victory over visiting West Scranton.

Jewell, one of the players celebrating Senior Night for the Cougars, also had 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.

Kyle Rupp scored 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while seniors A.J. Kucharski, L.V. Pegula and Eli Yusavage all made contributions to the win.

Kucharski was the team’s second-leading scorer with 12 points.

Yusavage, who also grabbed five rebounds, and Pegula each finished with six points and three assists.

West Scranton led 14-12 after one quarter and Valley View only led 23-20 at halftime before breaking away with a 17-3 third quarter.

Valley View is tied for first in the division with Abington Heights at 10-2 with one game remaining. The Cougars (17-3) play at Scranton Prep in Tuesday’s 6:45 regular-season finale while Abington Heights plays West Scranton at Scranton High.
