SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MADISON KIZER, Mid Valley senior third baseman
Time period: June 5-11
Game One: Kizer followed a Maranda Runco home run with one of her own as the first two batters of the third inning, giving Mid Valley a 5-0 lead June 5 on the way to a 7-1, home-field victory over Warrior Run in the first round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 3A state softball playoffs.
Game Two: Kizer drove in the tying run and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 4-2 victory over Forest Hills in the state quarterfinals. Kizer doubled to score Chiara Zavislak and came home on Courtney Rebar’s home run.
Season statistics: Kizer is batting .387 with 10 doubles, 2 triples, 4 home runs, 23 runs scored and 30 RBIs in 23 games.
About Madison: The three-year starter has greatly improved her batting average and power numbers as the clean-up hitter during her senior year. For her 67-game high school career, Kizer is hitting .281 with 18 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs, 49 runs and 51 RBI.
About the Spartanettes: Mid Valley is one win away from its second state championship game appearance in three years. The Spartanettes went 13-1 to win Lackawanna League Division 2 and are also the District 2 Class 3A champions with an overall record of 21-2.
