Montrose girls take Jordan Relays for fourth championship of season

By Tom Robinson, NEPASportsNation.com

SCRANTON – Tangi Smith was part of three event victories, serving as anchor on two of them, Thursday while leading Montrose to the Class 2A girls title of the 66th annual Jordan Relays at Memorial Stadium.

Carbondale also won three events and took second in a fourth, but Montrose’s ability to score in every event helped the Lady Meteors outscore the Chargerettes, 50-38.

Montrose finished second in one event and third in two others.

“This is a lot different,” Smith said of adding the Jordan title to the team’s Northwest Rangers Invitational, Lasagna Invitational and Lackawanna Track Conference Division 4 titles. “All the relays and having to learn all the different handoffs; this was great.”

The Lady Meteors had the night’s second-highest girls point total behind Class 3A champion Abington Heights.

“We’re really proud of that,” Smith said.

Smith, a 2021 state medalist sprinter, anchored the 4×100 and 4×400 relay and ran one of the 200-meter legs in the 1200 sprint medley.

Stephanie Summerville, Gracie Dalton, Chloe Diaz and Katie Diaz each were part of two of the relay wins.

Carbondale won the longer races, with help from the Forest City distance runners that are part of its team on a cooperative sponsorship of the sport.

Sisters Rachel Korty and Kate Korty joined Madalyn Borders in taking part in all three wins – the distance medley relay, 4×800 relay and 1600 sprint medley.

Emily Matoushek was on the two distance teams.
