Mia Snyder hit six 3-pointers while scoring a game-high 21 points and Montrose held off a Marian Catholic comeback Wednesday night as the Lady Meteors posted a 49-47, upset victory in a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 3A girls basketball second-round state tournament game.
Montrose outscored the District 11 champions for each of the first three quarters to build a 17-point lead, only to have Marian Catholic come within two with a 20-5 fourth quarter.
When the Lady Meteors held on, they advanced into Friday’s state quarterfinal at 7 p.m. at Wyoming Area against District 1 champion Faith Christian Academy (21-6). Montrose, the Lackawanna League Division 4 and District 2 Class 2A champion, is 22-4.
Snyder made three of her 3-pointers in the third quarter to help Montrose to a 21-9 advantage and the 44-27 lead. She hit another for the only Lady Meteors field goal of the fourth quarter.
Hayley Pompey went 5-for-6 from the line while scoring 7 of her 13 points when the Lady Meteors took a 14-10 lead after one quarter.
Montrose shot just 4-for-14 from the line the rest of the way, including 2-for-6 while trying to put the game away in the fourth quarter.
Snyder hit one 3-pointer in each of the first two quarters. She had five points in the second quarter as the Lady Meteors made it to the half with a 23-18 lead.
Carly Minchoff made three 3-pointers and scored half of her 20 points in the fourth-quarter comeback to lead Marian Catholic. Kerrigan Degris hit two 3-pointers in the fourth.
Frankie Martinelli scored 8 of her 10 points in the first quarter.
Marian Catholic entered the game with a 25-2 record.
Montrose follows up the win over the third-ranked Class 2A team in the state, according to www.TribLive.com, with a game against fifth-ranked Faith Christian.
