North Pocono moves into 2nd spot

North Pocono avenged a playoff loss from a year ago and used that victory to climb into the No. 2 Big School spot in the latest Riverfront Sports Super Six Girls Tennis Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Crestwood and Holy Cross also moved up in the rankings that were released Saturday while Hazleton Area and Holy Redeemer moved into the Super Six for the first time this season.

Abington Heights and Riverside remained in the No. 1 positions in the rankings, which are split into Big School (Class 3A) and Small School (Class 2A) categories.

Abington Heights posted a pair of 5-0 victories, including one in a rematch of last season’s District 2 Class 3A championship match with West Scranton.

North Pocono then handed West Scranton its second straight loss, pulling out a 3-2 victory to swap places with the Lady Invaders, taking over second. The Lady Trojans lost their other match, 3-2, to Riverside.

West Scranton is third despite the 1-2 start against a difficult schedule and is followed in the rankings by Wallenpaupack, Crestwood and Hazleton Area.

Wallenpaupack held fourth. It won its first two Lackawanna League matches by 5-0 scores.

Crestwood moved up from sixth to fifth after winning its only match of the week, 4-1, over Pittston Area.

Hazleton Area is 3-1, including 3-0 within District 2, to take over sixth. The Cougars lost a non-league match to Jim Thorpe, 5-0.

Scranton lost its first three matches, two by 3-2 scores and one 5-0 match to unbeaten Riverside.

Riverside held No. 1 among Small Schools. The Lady Vikes reached 3-0 with a 3-2 victory over the new Big School No. 2, North Pocono, and a 5-0 shutout of Scranton.

Scranton Prep, Wyoming Seminary and Dallas combined to go 6-0 during the week and hold second, third and fourth.

Wyoming Seminary had the busiest week of the group, winning three 5-0 matches in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

Holy Cross split two matches to move up from sixth to fifth. The Lady Crusaders lost 4-1 to Scranton Prep and beat Valley View, the former No. 5 team, by the same score.

With Valley View out of the rankings, Holy Redeemer moved in, taking over sixth. The Royals are 3-0.
