Playoff wins push Trail higher

Lackawanna Trail used a pair of playoff wins, including one over a higher-seeded, higher-ranked opponent on the road, to move up in this week’s Riverfront Sports Super Six Golf Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The Lions climbed from fourth to third among Small Schools, trading places with the team they knocked off in the Lackawanna League Class 2A semifinals, when the rankings were released Sunday night.

Lackawanna Trail defeated Riverside, which slipped to fourth, in Friday’s semifinals.

League playoff qualifiers Honesdale and Montrose moved back into the rankings this week.

Crestwood and Lake-Lehman remain as the No. 1 Big Schools and Small Schools after their players dominated Wyoming Valley Conference qualifying for Monday’s District 2 Individual Championships. Crestwood had the conference’s top four Class 3A players while Lake-Lehman put players in first, second, a third-place tie and sixth in Class 2A.

Abington Heights, Hazleton Area and North Pocono follow Crestwood among Big Schools.

Those teams will square off in their respective conference Class 3A finals for a spot in the District 2 Team Championships. Abington Heights and North Pocono will meet in the Lackawanna while Crestwood and Hazleton Area play in the WVC.

Honesdale, which had its team season end Friday in a Lackawanna semifinal loss to North Pocono, rejoined the rankings in fifth after beating rival Wallenpaupack and passing the Buckhorns into third place in the final divisional standings.

Wyoming Area remained sixth.

Wallenpaupack fell from the rankings.

Unbeaten regular-season division champions Lake-Lehman and Scranton Prep remain 1-2.

Scranton Prep and Lackawanna Trail will meet Wednesday at Elkview Country Club for the Lackawanna’s Class 2A berth in the district final.

Holy Redeemer, which will face Lake-Lehman for the WVC spot in the district final, remains in fifth.

Montrose replaced Wyoming Seminary in the sixth spot.
