Northwest is thriving since making the jump from District 2 to District 4 two years ago.
The Rangers are leading all classifications of District 4 boys basketball in victories after defeating visiting Tunkhannock, 58-54, Monday night in the only non-league game on the schedule.
Northwest improved to 10-1, beating an opponent from the Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2, the Shickshinny school’s former homes, for the second time this season. The Rangers also beat Hanover Area.
Tayler Yaple scored 20 points and Landon Hufford added 17 to lead the Rangers in the meeting between teams that both entered the night on four-game winning streaks.
Northwest, a Class 2A team, defeated the Class 4A Tigers.
Tunkhannock led by a point after one quarter and at halftime.
Yaple kept the Rangers close with three 3-pointers while scoring 10 points in the second quarter.
The Rangers held Tunkhannock to 10 points in the third to take a 43-39 lead.
Northwest then shot 8-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter with Hufford making four while Ryan Miner and Yaple made two each. The Rangers were 10-for-11 from the line in the game.
Tunkhannock (5-3) was led by Shane Macko with 17 points.
Ben Chilson, who hit three 3-pointers, and Dylan Mateus added 13 points each.
