Top-seeded Abington Heights bounced back from its only loss of the season to open the District 2 Class 3A playoffs with Monday’s 4-1 quarterfinal victory over visiting Wilkes-Barre Area.
The Comets had a 27-match Lackawanna League winning streak broken in the regular-season finale, a 3-2 loss to unbeaten Scranton Prep.
Abington Heights swept doubles, dropping just one game in four sets.
Luke Morgan-Quinn Hamilton won, 6-0, 6-0, at second doubles while Mike Rodyushkin-Ryan Salony won at first doubles.
Adam Vale also won in straight sets at third singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Sam Christman had to recover from losing to Stanley Shinzo in the first set to win at second singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Wilkes-Barre Area’s point came at first singles where Michael Hamel defeated Sam Weis, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Abington Heights advances to the semifinals, which are currently scheduled, along with the finals, for Wednesday at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre.
Two of the Class 3A quarterfinals were played Monday and the other two were postponed.
Second-seeded Crestwood defeated Berwick, 4-1, in Monday’s other quarterfinal.
Undefeated Dallas, which has not yielded a team point this season, shut out Valley View, 3-0, in the only Class 2A quarterfinal that was played.
With the team winner and advancement determined, the last two matches were not completed.
Two other Class 2A quarterfinals were postponed and one was already scheduled for Tuesday.
