ROUNDUP: Covelens, Hood end baseball games with home runs

Ryan Covelens blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday to lift Crestwood to an 8-7 victory over Tunkhannock in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 game.

The Comets entered their last at-bat trailing 7-4 and got within a run before Covelens launched his walk-off shot.

Wyoming Area’s J.J. Hood ended the game in a different way on a homer, locking up a 13-2, five-inning victory by pushing the Warriors over the 10-run mark for a Mercy Rule win over Hanover Area in WVC Division 2.

The walk-off homer made Hood 3-for-3 with two homers, a double, a walk, seven RBI and four runs scored.

Evan Melberger was 2-for-3 with a homer, stolen base and three runs scored.

Colin Klein led Hanover Area with a double and single.

Graedon Finarelli drove in four runs with three hits, including two doubles, when Lake-Lehman defeated Wyoming Seminary, 17-6, in another WVC Division 2 game.

Lake-Lehman ended the game after five innings when Cole Kaiser’s grand slam in the top of the fifth inning pushed the lead beyond 10 runs.

Luke Leventhall struck out 16 in a combined one-hitter as Lackawanna Trail shut out Mountain View, 5-0, in Lackawanna League Division 4.

Owen Lisk got the last out with the 17th Lackawanna Trail strikeout.

Chris Walsh had two of North Pocono’s five home runs in a 14-7, non-league victory over Mid Valley.

Abington Heights needed just 2½ innings to defeat Montrose, 19-0, in a non-league game.

SOFTBALL

The four WVC Division 1 games were decided by a total of 55-5.

Kelsie Peters drove in eight runs, going 3-for-4 with a homer and double, as Hazleton Area shut out Crestwood, 14-0, in five innings.

Victoria Spaciano drove in five runs on four hits, including a double and triple, for Dallas in a 15-3 rout of Wyoming Valley West.

Tori Para threw a four-inning, no-hitter as Pittston Area ripped Wilkes-Barre Area, 16-0, in another Division 1 game.

Para struck out five. She also went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Sage Weidlich and Maria Antal each homered and drove in three runs.

Paige Marabell homered and drove in three runs, Sydney Huff went 3-for-3 and Kaya Hannon struck out 10 as Tunkhannock downed Berwick, 10-2

Eliza DiStasi went 3-for-3 when Old Forge defeated Carbondale, 10-3, in Lackawanna Division 3.

Olivia Dougher and Madison Maloney each drove in four runs on three hits as West Scranton routed Pocono Mountain West, 15-0, in four innings.

Dougher had three doubles.

Mia Butka tossed a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Blue Ridge swept Mountain View and Abington Heights swept North Pocono with the three-set victories keeping the teams unbeaten and tied for first in the Lackawanna League.
