Shoats, Toomey named top players

Holy Redeemer senior Justice Shoats and Dunmore junior Ciera Toomey were named Players of the Year to lead the all-District 2 squads selected by our partner website, NEPABasketball.com.

Veteran Holy Cross boys coach Al Callejas and Jeff Gregory, the second-year leader of the Pittston Area girls program, received the Coach of the Year honors.

The all-District 2 squads followed a 12-day stretch of daily releases of the website’s all-star teams for each boys and girls division in the Lackawanna League and Wyoming Valley Conference.

Shoats, a first-team, all-District 2 selection as a sophomore and a second-team choice last season, helped make Holy Redeemer one of three District 2 boys teams to reach the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state semifinals. The Royals also were unbeaten Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 champions and won the District 2 Class 3A title.

Toomey, who announced her verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina Monday, led Dunmore to an unbeaten Lackawanna League Division 3 championship before the Lady Bucks won a District 2 Class 4A title. She had been a first-team, all-District 2 choice as both a freshman and sophomore.

Jason Shields from Scranton was a repeat, first-team, all-District 2 boys selection.

Moriah Murray, who led Dunmore to the state Class 4A quarterfinals after Toomey’s season ended with a knee injury in the district championship game, made first-team, all-District 2 for the fourth time. Rachael Rose, a 2021 Scranton Prep graduate, was the only previous player to be first-team, all-District 2 or Player of the Year in all four seasons.

Riverside’s Kylie Lavelle made it for the third time and Holy Cross’ Kaci Kranson joined them in repeating on the first team.
