Makenna Balay and Olivia Williams each homered and drove in two runs Wednesday to lead Hazleton Area’s come-from-behind, 7-3 victory over Scranton in a District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional semifinal softball game.
The win puts Hazleton Area in Tuesday’s subregional final against District 4’s Williamsport. The top-seeded Millionaires defeated Delaware Valley, 6-4, in the other semifinal.
Hazleton Area has secured the district title with Wednesday’s results.
Scranton scored three times in the top of the first with the help of a two-run Kennedy Bittenbender double.
The Lady Knights held that lead until the Lady Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Hazleton Area added three more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Balay also singled. Williams scored twice.
Winning pitcher Gabriela Terracino drove in two runs and scored two. Terracino and Ashley Seiwell, who worked two innings for the save, shut Scranton out over the last six innings.
Abigail Yevitz had two hits for Scranton.
Williamsport 6, Delaware Valley 4
Williamsport fought off an upset bid by Delaware Valley with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The top-seeded Millionaires trailed, 2-0, before its big inning.
Delaware Valley rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh, but Williamsport held off the rally.
Emily Henn was 3-for-4 with a homer to lead the Lady Warriors. Avery Calvario had two hits and drove in a run.
MONDAY’S QUARTERFINAL
Delaware Valley 11, Wilkes-Barre Area 4
Delaware Valley reached Wednesday’s semifinal by winning the only game needed to trim the field to four.
The Lady Warriors broke a five-game losing streak while handing the Wolfpack its 10th straight loss.
