Wyoming Valley West, Holy Redeemer and Tunkhannock all posted victories when the District 2 boys volleyball playoffs opened Wednesday.
Tournament action began with the one match needed to trim the District 2 Class 3A field to its four semifinalists and three of the four quarterfinals in the District 1-2-11 Class 2A Subregional.
Wyoming Valley West outlasted visiting Wilkes-Barre Area in five sets, 22-25, 25-16, 28-26, 16-25, 15-12, in Class 3A to reach Tuesday’s semifinals at top-seeded Delaware Valley.
Chris Matthews led the way for the Spartans with eight kills.
Zach Bufano and Tony Shusta each had 12 service points. Logan Bowling added eight kills and eight points.
Top-seeded Holy Redeemer and Tunkhannock each swept their matches while North Pocono was swept out of the tournament in its trip to face Dock Mennonite, the District 1 school that landed the second seed.
Will Wasiakowski had 28 assists in Holy Redeemer’s 25-9, 25-19, 25-12 romp over Crestwood.
Andrew Slacktish, Brady Slacktish and Dylan Mateus combined to lead Tunkhannock past Berwick, 25-13, 25-21, 25-18.
Andrew Slacktish had 8 kills, 16 assists and 11 digs. Brady Slacktish had 7 kills and 18 digs. Mateus had 8 kills and 12 digs.
Berwick was led by Cody Smith with 10 kills and 14 digs.
Christopher Dock, which defeated potentially finals opponent Holy Redeemer in non-league play earlier this season, topped North Pocono, 25-9, 25-9, 25-22. It will host Tunkhannock in Tuesday’s semifinals.
