Royals new Small School boys #1

Holy Redeemer has enjoyed an eventful first 10 days of the boys basketball season.

The Royals, the only team in District 2 to play Sunday afternoon, are also the first boys team to reach 4-0.

And, now, they are the new Small School boys No. 1 team in the first in-season update of the Riverfront Sports Super Six Basketball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

In three of the four sets of rankings, the preseason Super Six teams thrived.

The other – Small School girls – saw the teams collectively struggle. As a result, movement is relatively light between the preseason rankings and the updated rankings, which were released Sunday evening.

The Valley View boys, Scranton Prep boys and Montrose girls all moved up.

The Riverside boys and Old Forge girls joined the rankings.

Scranton Prep, in Big School girls, and Dunmore, in Small School girls, remained as the No. 1 teams along with Abington Heights in Big School boys.

The preseason ranked boys teams and Big School girls teams went a combined 41-10 in the first 10 days, including 34-3 when ranked teams were facing unranked teams.

Holy Redeemer won on the first two nights of the season to claim the championship of the first Wilkes-Barre Area Tip-Off Tournament. The Royals then won a meeting of defending district champions against Scranton and went to New York City Sunday to rout Hunter College Prep, 62-34.

Holy Cross, the last boys team to open its season, fell at Valley View, 43-35, Thursday night and slipped from first to second.

Mid Valley and Old Forge held third and fourth.

Riverside, one of three Lackawanna League Division 3 teams who were unranked in the preseason but are off to 3-0 starts in non-league play, moved into the rankings and jumped into the fifth spot.

Blue Ridge held off the others – Carbondale and Lakeland – with its own impressive 3-0 start. The Raiders scored at least 71 points in each game to hold sixth.

Dunmore fell from the rankings after two losses to Big Schools.

The first three Big School boys teams are the same as the preseason.

Abington Heights is followed by Dallas and Hazleton Area.

The top-ranked Comets averaged 29.7 points in the first quarters of their three wins, outscoring teams 89-19.

Dallas opened the season with an 85-point game against East Stroudsburg North and is 2-0.

Hazleton Area is 2-1 with a one-point loss in three games against strong programs from outside the district.

Valley View and Scranton Prep move up one spot each, taking fourth and fifth and dropping Tunkhannock to sixth.

The Cougars are 3-0 and the Cavaliers are 2-0 with two come-from-behind wins, one of them over Tunkhannock in the opener.

Tunkhannock also got blown out by Abington Heights, 81-35, but salvaged its spot in the rankings with an impressive win Saturday night over Trinity.

The Big School girls rankings remained the same.

Scranton Prep is followed, in order, by Pittston Area, Wyoming Valley West, Hazleton Area, Abington Heights and Scranton.

The top four teams are a combined 11-0, including Hazleton Area being the first district girls team to reach 4-0.

The six teams in the preseason Small School girls rankings went just 5-9.

Dunmore, the next-to-last team in the district to open the season, defeated North Pocono, 46-26, in its only game Saturday to hold No. 1.

Montrose did not open until Friday and took Big School Valley View to overtime on the road before losing. The Lady Meteors moved up one spot from fifth to fourth.

The other teams each lost twice.

Because of the competition faced and wins in other games, Lake-Lehman and Holy Redeemer held second and third.

Western Wayne slipped from fourth to fifth.

Old Forge won its first two games and took over sixth, replacing Holy Cross, which lost its first two games by more than 30 points each.
