Scranton Prep, N. Pocono claim District 2 girls team golf titles

With Miranda Karoscik and Gwen Powell leading the way, Scranton Prep and North Pocono claimed District 2 girls team golf titles Wednesday at Elmhurst Country Club.

Karoscik shot the day’s best round with a 2-over-par, 75 to help Scranton Prep run away with the Class 2A title by 66 shots.

The Classics, who won District 2 and finished fifth in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament last season as a Class 3A team, moved down for this two-year cycle after the state organization’s routine review of enrollments. Scranton Prep ended Elk Lake’s four-year run as Class 2A champion, 244-310.

Powell shot a 76 for North Pocono, which beat out Tunkhannock, 277-301, for the Class 3A title.

Each tournament drew four teams.

Teams were allowed up to five players, but counted the best three scores.

The two champions succeeded in shooting 300 or better that the winner needed in order to be eligible for state play.

If District 4 qualifies a team in their class, North Pocono or Scranton Prep would need to beat team in a subregional match Oct. 13 at Fox Hill Country Club in order to earn a PIAA Championships berth.

Gianna Cafarella shot 81 and Ana Galko 88 to complete Scranton Prep’s winning score.

Karoscik broke par on the back nine with a 35.

Lyla Jones and Ava Pabst shot 98 and 101 for North Pocono.

Hallie Brown helped Tunkhannock to second place by shooting 80.

A total of 35 girls competed. Scranton Prep players had 4 of the best 6 scores and 5 of the best 11.

Chloe Lynch had an 89 and Zoe Galko a 101 for the Classics, who also won the district Class 3A title in 2020.
