Season in Review: Boys Basketball

EDITOR’S NOTE: As a step in getting ready for the 2022-23 winter sports season, NEPASportsNation.com is taking a look back at the 2021-22 season in District 2.

Team champions

Dallas won the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and Tournament titles and went on to win the District 2 Class 4A championship.

Holy Redeemer won both the WVC Division 2 and District 2 Class 3A titles.

Scranton won both Lackawanna League Division 1 and the District 2-4 Class 6A title.

The other District 2 champions were Pittston Area in Class 5A, Holy Cross in 2A and Forest City in A.

Wallenpaupack, Mid Valley and Elk Lake won the Lackawanna Division 2 through 4 titles.

Lackawanna Division 1: Scranton 11-2, Abington Heights 9-4, Scranton Prep 9-4, Valley View 4-9, West Scranton 4-9.

Lackawanna Division 2: Wallenpaupack 11-2, North Pocono 9-4, Delaware Valley 5-8, Honesdale 3-10, Western Wayne 0-13.

Lackawanna Division 3: Mid Valley 10-2, Holy Cross 10-2, Old Forge 7-5, Dunmore 6-6, Riverside 6-6, Lakeland 3-9, Carbondale 0-12.

Lackawanna Division 4: Elk Lake 11-1, Blue Ridge 10-2, Forest City 7-5, Mountain View 6-6, Susquehanna 6-6, Montrose 2-10, Lackawanna Trail 2-10.

WVC Division 1: Dallas 12-2, Hazleton Area 12-2, Pittston Area 11-3, Wilkes-Barre Area 7-7, Crestwood 5-9, Tunkhannock 5-9, Wyoming Valley West 4-10, Berwick 0-14.

WVC Division 2: Holy Redeemer 12-0, Nanticoke 10-2, Hanover Area 7-5, Wyoming Area 5-7, Lake-Lehman 4-8, Wyoming Seminary 3-9, MMI Prep 1-11.

Rankings

Dallas and Holy Redeemer were the final No. 1 teams in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Dallas finished 27-4 and led the Big Schools. It was followed by: Scranton, second; Pittston Area, third; Mid Valley, fourth; Abington Heights, fifth; and Scranton Prep, sixth.

Holy Redeemer went 24-5 and led the Small Schools. It was followed by: Holy Cross, second; Old Forge, third; Riverside, fourth; Dunmore, fifth; and Elk Lake, sixth.

State impact

District 2 sent five teams to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state quarterfinals and three to the semifinals.

Dallas (Class 4A), Holy Redeemer (3A) and Old Forge (2A) all reached the state semifinals.

Scranton (6A) and Holy Cross (2A) were the other quarterfinalists.

Pittston Area (5A) and Scranton Prep (4A) also won state tournament games.

Jason Shields from Scranton (6A), Austin Finarelli from Dallas (4A) and Justice Shoats from Holy Redeemer (3A) were all second-team, all-state choices by Pennsylvania Sports Writers. Old Forge’s Joe Macciocco made the third team.

Noteworthy

Holy Redeemer fell in overtime, 73-72, in the state semifinals to Devon Prep, which went on to win the championship game by 18 points. … Dallas and Mid Valley won their division titles in playoffs, defeating Hazleton Area and Holy Cross after finishing in first-place ties. … Scranton was the only repeat District 2 champion. The Knights also repeated as Lackawanna League Division 1 champion while Elk Lake won its second straight Lackawanna Division 4 title.
