Season In Review: Wrestling

EDITOR’S NOTE: As a step in getting ready for the 2022-23 winter sports season, NEPASportsNation.com is taking a look back at the 2021-22 season in District 2.

State champions

Jaden Pepe repeated as a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 2A state champion, adding a 120-pound title to the 113-pound championship he won in 2021 as a sophomore.

Delaware Valley’s Zac Jacaruso won the Class 3A title at 113 pounds.

Team champions

Abington Heights and Lackawanna Trail, the Lackawanna League Division 1 and 2 champions, also won the District 2 Class 3A and 2A titles in both the Dual Meet Tournament and the team scoring at the Individual Championships.

Hazleton Area was the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champion while Wyoming Area won Division 2.

Lackawanna League Division 1: Abington Heights 6-0, Delaware Valley 5-1, Wallenpaupack 4-2, West Scranton 3-3, North Pocono 1-5, Scranton 1-5, Valley View 1-5.

Lackawanna League Division 2: Lackawanna Trail 7-0, Honesdale 6-1, Western Wayne 5-2, Montrose 4-3, Blue Ridge 2-5, Scranton Prep 2-5, Elk Lake 1-6, Mountain View 1-6.

Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1: Hazleton Area 6-0, Wyoming Valley West 5-1, Pittston Area 4-2, Tunkhannock 3-3, Crestwood 2-4, Wilkes-Barre Area 1-5, Dallas 0-6.

Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2: Wyoming Area 4-0, Berwick 3-1, Nanticoke 2-2, Lake-Lehman 1-3, Hanover Area 0-4.

Rankings

Lackawanna Trail was the No. 1 team in the final Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The Lions were followed by: Abington Heights in second; Delaware Valley in third; Wyoming Area in fourth; Honesdale in fifth; Hazleton Area in sixth; Wallenpaupack in seventh and Wyoming Valley West in eighth.

Noteworthy

Pepe finished 45-0. He led Wyoming Area to fourth place in the team standings in Class 2A at the state individual championships. … Jacaruso went 40-1. … District 2 had seven wrestlers earn state medals with top-eight finishes. Pepe’s Wyoming Area teammates, Anthony Evanitsky and Cooper Price, were third and fourth at 138 and 152 pounds. Lackawanna Trail’s Robbie Schneider was fifth in 2A at 160. … Jacaruso was joined in Class 3A by Julian Everitt of Pittston Area placing sixth at 132 and Luke Sirianni from Abington Heights taking seventh at 106. … Pepe, Jacaruso and Schneider were also Eastern Super Regional and Northeast Regional champions. Schneider won his titles at 160 pounds in Class 2A. … Abington Heights finished seventh in Class 3A in the state dual meet tournament while Lackawanna Trail was part of a four-way tie for ninth place.
