Sem places two in doubles semis

Wyoming Seminary’s brilliant girls tennis season continued Monday when the Blue Knights were the only team to get both of its entries through to the semifinals of the District 2 Class 2A doubles tournament.

The fifth-seeded team of Dominica Delayo-Margaret Mihalick pulled off the only upset of the 30 matches played to date in the tournament. The second-seeded team of Ella Krypel-Ilana Rosenthal was one of just two to win twice Monday and is the only team left that has not lost a game through three rounds.

Defending champions Madeline DeFaber-Schumacher/Bella Aniska from Riverside and Alyssa Wigley-Annie Johnson from Scranton Prep were the others to advance.

District 2 is now down to four semifinalists in both Class 3A, which completed early rounds Saturday, and Class 2A, which needed to come back to Kirby Park Monday after getting interrupted by rain. The tournament will conclude Wednesday or Thursday, a determination to be made after district champions Abington Heights and Wyoming Seminary have competed in the first round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament Tuesday.

Saturday’s Class 2A action was halted with 10 players remaining, meaning two second-round and four quarterfinal matchups were needed Monday to set the semifinal field.

Wyoming Seminary is the unbeaten Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2 Class 2A team champion. It formed its two doubles tournament entries from its regular number-one doubles team and by putting its top two singles players, Krypel and Rosenthal, together.

Krypel-Rosenthal have won all three matches, 6-0, 6-0, starting Saturday, then continuing Monday with a win over Honesdale’s Kayla Kuta and Hannah Merritt. They went back out for the quarterfinals where they defeated Caitlyn Bestrycki-Christina Monroe from Holy Cross.

Third-seeded Wigley and Johnson, who faced Rosenthal and Krypel respectively in the district team final, won their only Monday match to set up the semifinal pairing. They stopped Holy Redeemer’s Carissa Benderavich-Khushi Syed, 6-0, 6-1.

Delayo-Mehalick knocked off fourth-seeded Caroline Stallard-Audrey DelGaudio from Dallas, 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

DeFaber-Schumacher/Aniska handled Scranton Prep’s Sarah Aubrey-Leelah Farrell, 6-0, 6-0. The returning state bronze medalist team reached the semifinals having lost just two games in six sets.

Aubrey-Farrell won one of Monday’s opening matches, beating the Holy Cross team of Maddy Kranson-Kaci Kranson, 6-2, 6-1.
