Defending state champion Devon Prep broke loose for 33 points in the second quarter Wednesday night while eliminating Mid Valley from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 3A boys basketball tournament with an 82-52, second-round romp at Whitehall High School.
The Tide overcame a big final game by Danny Nemitz, Mid Valley’s all-time leading scorer.
Nemitz scored 30 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. He was 9-for-17 from the floor, 2-for-5 on 3-pointers and 10-for-10 from the line.
Lucas Orchard, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, led Devon Prep with 23 points. Orchard is a McDonald’s All-American nominee with National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I offers.
The Tide turned an 18-10 lead after one quarter into a 51-27 romp at halftime. The lead reached 66-40 after three quarters.
Demaja Dunston added nine points while Ricky Vinansky had seven points and six rebounds for the Spartans.
Mid Valley, the Lackawanna League Division 3 and District 2 Class 3A runner-up, finished 20-7.
