Scranton Prep ended Wyoming Seminary’s reign as Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 2A girls tennis team champion.
Now, it’s time for the unbeaten Classics to try to make a run at a state title of their own.
Scranton Prep opens the state tournament close to home Tuesday as part of a doubleheader featuring both District 2 champions at the Birchwood Racquet Club in Clarks Summit.
The Classics meet District 11 champion Moravian Academy (14-1) in the Class 2A opener at 10:30 a.m.
Abington Heights plays Cumberland Valley in a Class 3A match scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The third-place team from District 3 is 16-3.
Scranton Prep is 17-0 and handed 16-1 teams Wyoming Seminary and Abington Heights each their only loss of the season.
Wyoming Seminary’s state title run began last season with a 3-2 victory over Moravian Academy in the first round.
Moravian Academy and Scranton Prep have combined to reach eight state finals without winning one. Moravian Academy lost in the 2012 and 2020 finals. Scranton Prep played in four of the first five, 2000-2004, then again in 2013 and 2014.
Scranton Prep has won 19 of the 23 Class 2A titles and ranks fifth in state history in team tournament wins with a 25-18 record.
Abington Heights and Cumberland Valley were each eliminated in the first round of the state tournament last season. The Comets are 3-7 all-time in state tournament matches.
Tuesday’s winners from around the state advance to Hershey. The quarterfinals will be played will be held there Friday, followed by semifinals and finals Saturday.
