EDITOR’S NOTE: Since this story was posted, we have learned of two more girls basketball game postponements: MMI Prep at Wyoming Area and Carbondale at Dunmore.

Tuesday marks opening day in all four divisions of Lackawanna League girls basketball as well as Division 2 of Wyoming Valley Conference boys basketball.

At the same time many basketball teams around District are starting up their league schedules, swimming teams are returning to action after a holiday break for all teams and a much longer break at another school.

COVID-related postponements continue to alter the schedule, but three teams appear ready to open title defenses in Lackawanna League girls basketball.

Division 2 champion Western Wayne opens with a Division 1-2 crossover game at West Scranton. The game is part of the league schedule and standings.

Dunmore hosts Carbondale in Division 3 while Montrose travels to Blue Ridge in Division 4.

West Scranton is the only Division 1 team beginning its league season tonight.

Other openers include: North Pocono at Delaware Valley in Division 2 and Elk Lake at Forest City in Division 3.

The WVC Division 2 opening schedule includes a rivalry game with defending champion, but winless, Wyoming Seminary playing and Holy Redeemer, the unbeaten, preseason favorite.

The boys schedule also includes a meeting of ranked teams in WVC Division 1 and two Lackawanna champions opening title defenses. In each case, the division, but not all the involved teams, have started league play.

No. 4 Dallas (1-0 in the division, 3-1 overall) is at No. 3 Pittston Area (0-0, 5-1) in the WVC Division 1 game between teams in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The defending champions in action are North Pocono at home against Delaware Valley in Division 2 and Riverside at home against Lakeland in Division 3.

There are two more openers in WVC Division 1: Tunkhannock at Wilkes-Barre Area and Berwick at Wyoming Valley West.

There is a ranked meeting between 2-0 Lackawanna League teams in girls swimming where No. 6 Valley View is at No. 4 Delaware Valley.

The schools’ boys teams also meet.

Other WVC boys and girls swim meets have Berwick at Wilkes-Barre Area and Pittston Area at Lake-Lehman.
