Five district girls tennis quarterfinals, three first-vs.-second showdowns and a series of interesting cross country matchups highlight Tuesday’s 7-sport, 45-event schedule in District 2 sports.
Seedings often make the No. 5 vs. No. 4 matchup the best in the quarterfinal round of a bracket.
That could be the case in District 2 girls tennis where Wallenpaupack (10-5) is at West Scranton (10-4) and Holy Redeemer (10-2) is at Riverside (12-2) in Class 2A in 4 p.m. matches.
Two of the games matching first- and second-place teams are in girls soccer and the other is in field hockey.
Wallenpaupack and Pittston Area needed a playoff to decide Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 field hockey last season. Defending champion Wallenpaupack (6-0-1 in division, 8-3-1 overall) has a chance to take command of this season’s race when it travels to Pittston Area (5-2, 6-5).
The top two Big School girls teams in the Riverfront United Super Six Soccer Power Rankings of District 2 teams meet when second-place Abington Heights (7-1-2, 8-1-2) travels to Delaware Valley (10-0, 13-0-1) for a Lackawanna League Division 1 game.
First-place Lake-Lehman (7-0, 9-4) is at second-place Wyoming Area (5-1, 6-4) in WVC Division 2.
The tight five-way race in Lackawanna Division 3 continues with two of the three teams tied for second going head-to-head while the other plays a team a half-game behind that pack.
Mountain View (8-2, 9-4) is at Western Wayne (8-2, 8-3-1) while Dunmore (8-3, 8-3-1) is at Montrose (8-2).
The cluster meet format in Lackawanna League cross country puts Scranton Prep against three strong opponents at Abington Heights and gives Honesdale’s two teams key matchups against different opponents in a home meet.
Scranton Prep is 16-1 in boys as it prepares to face North Pocono (17-0), Abington Heights (16-1) and Valley View (10-7). Its girls team is 13-4 going into the meet against Abington Heights (17-0), Valley View (14-3) and North Pocono (13-4).
Honesdale is in a pair of meets pitting 15-2 teams against 14-3 teams. The Lady Hornets (15-2) face Scranton (14-3) while the Hornets (14-3) meet Mid Valley (15-2).
The best of the girls volleyball matchups has Crestwood (9-3, 11-3) at Holy Redeemer (8-2, 9-4) in the WVC and North Pocono (8-4, 9-7) at Dunmore (10-2) in Lackawanna Division 1.
There are also boys soccer games on the schedule.
