Two field hockey titles will be decided in a doubleheader while the entire quarterfinal round of the girls soccer tournament gets underway in District 2 Tuesday.
Honesdale and Crestwood will each try to defend titles during the field hockey doubleheader at Wyoming Seminary’s Klassner Field.
Hazleton Area challenges Honesdale for the District 2 Class 3A championship at 6, followed by Selinsgrove against Crestwood in the District 2-4 Class 2A Subregional title game at 7:30.
Although both games feature top seeds attempting to repeat, the history in the matchups is distinctly different.
Both Honesdale and Hazleton Area went into last year’s game on Hazleton Area’s home field looking for their first district titles. Honesdale’s 3-2 overtime victory forced Hazleton Area to settle for second place for the fifth time.
Only the winner of the Class 3A final goes into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament.
Both finalists have already qualified for the state Class 2A tournament.
Selinsgrove, which won its 17th straight District 4 title when it beat Selinsgrove, 3-0, in the subregional quarterfinals, is making its 20th straight state trip.
The Seals, however, have made just one appearance in the final, a loss in 2009.
Crestwood has won five state titles, the most recent in 2012, and played in three other finals, most recently in 2014.
Honesdale (14-5) also won this year’s Wyoming Valley Conference meeting with Hazleton Area (12-8), beating the Lady Cougars, 1-0.
Crestwood (17-2) and Selinsgrove (15-5) have not met, but there are some common opponents. Crestwood is 3-0 against District 4 teams while Selinsgrove is 2-3 against District 2 teams.
The girls soccer tournament has games starting at 3:30, 4, 5, 6 and 6:30, all on home fields of the higher seeds.
There are two games on the schedule pitting teams with winning records against each other, both sending a fifth seed to play a fourth seed, both at 6.
Wallenpaupack (9-7-1) is at Crestwood (10-7-1) in Class 3A while Nanticoke (12-6) is at Western Wayne (11-5-2) in Class 2A.
