Friday means high school football, but also much more in District 2 sports.
There are 14 games involving Lackawanna Football Conference or Wyoming Valley Conference teams on the football schedule, highlighted by an invasion from District 4.
Southern Columbia, the team with the most state titles in Pennsylvania football history, brings a 63-game winning streak to Wyoming Area, the only District team to produce a state title in the last 23 seasons.
Both teams are 3-0. They also met in 2019 when Southern Columbia won 42-0 on the same field before they both won Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state championships – the Tigers in Class 2A and the Warriors in Class 3A.
There are two other games in District 2 pitting winning teams against each other in non-league play.
Wallenpaupack (2-1) is at Lakeland (3-0) and Tunkhannock (2-1) is at North Pocono (2-1). All four teams are ranked in the Gaughan Auto Store Super Six Power Rankings of LFC and WVC teams on NEPAFootball.com.
Two 0-3 teams meet when Montrose plays Holy Redeemer at Northwest in a game originally scheduled for Saturday. It was moved up when the Northwest field became available earlier following the cancellation of the Old Forge-Northwest game.
There are also 30 other events in 6 sports, highlighted by the WVC boys soccer game that has first-place Crestwood (3-0 in division, 4-1 overall) at second-place Dallas (2-0-1). Crestwood is ranked third and Dallas fifth among Big Schools in the Riverfront United Super Six Soccer Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
Also, Abington Heights is at Riverside in a non-league match between 9-2 golf teams.
