Two large cross country invitationals – one locally and one outside the area – highlight the Saturday schedule in District 2 sports.

The 28th annual Lackawanna County Commissioners’ Cross Country Invitational is set at McDade Park in Scranton with varsity girls scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and varsity boys at 11:15.

Many of the state’s top runners will gather at the Hershey Parkview Course to test themselves on the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships course by running in the 16th annual PIAA Foundation Meet.

The Girls White race for Class A runners is set for 9 a.m., followed by Girls Blue (2A) at 9:45 and Girls Gold (3A) at 10:30. Boys races follow the same order with start times scheduled for 11:15 a.m., noon and 12:45 p.m.

The Wyoming Seminary and Crestwood field hockey teams are at The Proving Grounds in Conshocken for the MAX Field Hockey National Invitational, which features 15 of the teams in the MAXfieldhockey.com national Top 25.

There are also four football games – three afternoon and one night – on the schedule.

Abington Heights (0-4) opens its Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 schedule at home against Wallenpaupack, which is 0-1 in the division and 1-3 overall.

Mid Valley (1-3) is at Susquehanna (2-2) in a non-league game between two of the seven teams vying for the four District 2 Class 2A playoff berths. Susquehanna begins the day in third and Mid Valley in sixth.

Holy Cross (0-4) is at Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech (1-2).

Holy Redeemer (2-2) hosts Milton (3-1) in a 7 p.m. game at King’s College.

Blue Ridge, which is unbeaten overall, is hosting Lake-Lehman, which is unbeaten in the Wyoming Valley Conference, and Athens in girls volleyball.

There are also busy schedules in boys and girls soccer.
