WILKES-BARRE – Holy Redeemer recovered from a slow start, then took control in the second half Thursday night to defeat Mid Valley, 51-40, and capture its third District 2 Class 3A boys basketball title in four years at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Zach Perta scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half. He grabbed seven rebounds, blocked two shots, dished out two assists and punctuated the victory with a breakaway dunk for a 45-35 lead with 1:30 left.

Jacob Hunter scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Darryl Wright scored 10 points, dished out 6 assists and made 3 steals.

George Sabatini came off the bench to grab nine rebounds, seven of them in the second half, and provide interior defense.

Danny Nemitz led Mid Valley with 16 points.

WILKES-BARRE – Mid Valley jumped out 12-6 after one quarter and added the first basket of the fourth quarter.

Holy Redeemer closed to within, 22-21, at halftime.

Danny Nemitz 12 points for Mid Valley.

WILKES-BARRE – Maya Jenkins scored 12 points and 4 Scranton Prep teammates added at least 8 each as the Classics won their fifth District 2 Class 4A girls basketball title in six years by handling Wyoming Area, 58-31, Friday night.

Clair McGrath and Bella Dennebaum added 10 points each. McGrath had five steals and four assists.

Rita Collins chipped in nine points and five assists. Jenna Hillebrand added eight points coming off the bench.

Olivia Allen led Wyoming Area with seven points.

Scranton Prep forced 26 turnovers.

WILKES-BARRE – Scranton Prep leads 26-11 at halftime in the District 2 Class 4A championship game with Wyoming Area.

The Classics scored the game’s first nine points, then took a 19-2 lead in the second quarter before the Lady Warriors fought back.

Wyoming Area put together a 9-2 run, but Scranton Prep scored the last five points of the half.

Scranton Prep shot 11-for-21 in the first half, including 4-for-6 on 3-pointers.

Claire McGrath is 3-for-4 with six points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

There are two games on tonight’s schedule.

Scranton Prep, which came within a one-point loss of winning a fifth straight District 2 Class 4A girls title last week, faces Wyoming Area in the 6 p.m. opener.

Holy Redeemer looks for its third straight Class 3A boys title at 8 p.m.
