Top-ranked team stops Honesdale

Ava Zerfass and Melea Weber scored two goals each Saturday as two-time defending state champion Emmaus eliminated Honesdale with a 7-0 victory in a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 3A state semifinal field hockey playoff at East Stroudsburg South.

Emmaus improved to 25-0 while reaching the state quarterfinal for the 13th straight season. It is ranked as the No. 1 high school team in the country by MAXFieldHockey.com.

Honesdale, the District 2 champion, was coming off its first state tournament win in program history four days earlier against Spring-Ford with a 5-4 victory.

Emmaus, however, remains too strong for the rising Honesdale team.

Entering the tournament with its 34th straight District 11 title, Emmaus is seeking its 15th PIAA state title. It has won more than 1,000 games under head coach Sue Butz-Stavin.

Rachel Herbine contributed to the semifinal victory by scoring her team-high 49th goal and assisting on four others.
