TUESDAY RECAP: Holy Redeemer wins softball showdown

Jenna Santuk struck out 14 and went 4-for-4 at the plate Tuesday to lead Holy Redeemer past Hanover Area, 9-1, for sole possession of the Wyoming Valley Conference softball lead. The game also matched leaders in the races for top seeds in two of the six district tournaments. Holy Redeemer, the Class 3A leader, is 3-0 in Division 2 and 6-0 overall. Hanover Area, the Class 4A leader, is 2-1 and 3-1. At 6-0, the Royals match Abington Heights for the best overall record in District 2.

Wyoming Area overcame a six-run top of the first inning by Nanticoke to pull out an 8-7 victory and move into a second-place tie in Division 2. Jocelyn Williams led the way, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Anna Wisnewski also had three runs and three hits.

Mid Valley claimed sole possession of the Lackawanna League Division 3 lead with a 5-0 win over Holy Cross. The Spartanettes, who were held under 10 runs for the first time, are 3-0 in the division and 5-0 overall while outscoring opponents, 48-4. Holy Cross dropped to 2-1 and 2-2. Lakeland is 1-0 for the only other unbeaten record in the division.

West Scranton knocked Valley View out of a share of the Lackawanna League Division 1 lead and claimed one for itself with a 7-2 victory. West Scranton used the win to claim the lead in the Class 5A seedings race and to join Abington Heights in a tie for the division lead at 2-0.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

London Montgomery set the school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.44 seconds to help Scranton Prep defeat West Scranton, 89-49, in a Lackawanna Track Conference Division 1 meet.

Valley View and Montrose each improved to 2-0 in their divisions for sole possession of the leads. Valley View defeated Scranton, 105-44, in LTC Division 1. Montrose handled Susquehanna, 119-26, in LTC Division 4.

GIRLS LACROSSE

The top three teams – Crestwood, Scranton Prep and Wyoming Area – all remained undefeated in the Wyoming Valley Conference. Jill Taleroski had four goals and four assists and Isabella Caporuscio scored five times as Crestwood (5-0) defeated Pittston Area, 13-4. Christina DeNaples scored seven goals for Scranton Prep (4-0) in a 17-4 romp over Wilkes-Barre Area. Emma Kelleher had nine goals and three assists while Makenzie Switzer had eight goals and five assists when Wyoming Area (4-0) routed Dallas, 22-5.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Matt Henneforth had 25 kills, 15 digs, 5 aces and 4 blocks and Western Wayne pulled away from a tight match during the fifth set of a 22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 15-3 Lackawanna League victory over North Pocono.
