Wild week alters races, rankings

Two squads occupying positions in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Basketball Power Rankings of District 2 teams squared off seven times in the past week with the lower-ranked team winning five of those games.

The results of a wild week altered rankings in some cases and intensified debate about who is best in others.

Along with two instances of dominant girls teams clinching at least a tie for first place, there were also leadership changes in three of the six boys divisions of the two leagues that make up the district.

The Mid Valley and Old Forge boys and Hazleton Area girls used wins over higher-ranked teams to climb in the rankings that were released Sunday evening.

Scranton Prep and Pittston Area remained 1-2 in Big School girls after clinching at least first-place ties in Division 1 of the Lackawanna League and Wyoming Valley Conference respectively.

The Abington Heights girls also moved up while the Riverside girls rejoined the rankings.

Abington Heights holds No. 1 in Big School boys, but No. 2 Valley View made its case for strong consideration for the top spot by beating the Comets, 41-38.

The Holy Redeemer boys and Lake-Lehman girls held on to top rankings among Small Schools.

Abington Heights and Valley View are now tied for first place in Lackawanna Division 1 boys and each is leading its race for a top seed in the District 2 playoffs.

The Comets remain at No. 1 on the basis of a 14-point win compared the 3-point win by the Cougars in their head-to-head meetings, along with a stronger non-league schedule and a more-impressive performance in comparisons against four of their six common opponents.

Valley View has the recency argument in its favor with not only Friday’s win, but a seven-game winning streak that included 5 in a row by at least 17 points before facing Abington Heights.

The Big School boys rankings are unchanged.

Dallas, Pittston Area, Nanticoke and Scranton Prep remain third through sixth. They combined to go 8-1 with No. 3 Dallas beating No. 4 Pittston Area, 70-47, for sole possession of the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 lead.

When the ranked Big School boys teams were not facing each other, they were going 9-0 against unranked teams.

Mid Valley is the only new No. 2 team this week, taking over that spot in Small School boys.

The Spartans swapped places with Holy Cross, which they beat, 54-45, Friday night, at the top of the Lackawanna Division 3 standings and by moving up from third in the Super Six.

Riverside started the week by also beating Holy Cross. However, after that 40-38 victory, the Vikings lost to Old Forge, which climbed over Riverside in a switch between fourth and five places.

Forest City held on to its Lackawanna Division 4 lead and sixth in the rankings.

Abington Heights and Hazleton Area each moved up one spot in Big School girls, taking over third and fourth and pushing Wilkes-Barre Area down from third to fifth. The Wolfpack dropped games during the week to higher-ranked Pittston Area and formerly lower-ranked Hazleton Area.

Wyoming Valley West held on to sixth.

The top four teams in Small School girls held their ground by going a combined 7-0.

Lake-Lehman is followed by Dunmore, Holy Redeemer and Montrose.

Riverside ran its winning streak to five games with wins over Holy Cross and Old Forge to come back into the rankings in fifth.

Western Wayne lost twice to slip from fifth to sixth.

Mid Valley won twice, but dropped out of the rankings after being sixth last week.
