Wyoming Seminary field hockey hands Wyoming Area first defeat

Emma Watchilla scored with 1:08 left in overtime Wednesday night to lift Wyoming Seminary over Wyoming Area, 3-2, and into a first-place tie in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 field hockey.

Watchilla got the ball high on the right side of the circle as Wyoming Seminary continued a penalty corner play. As she moved toward the end line on the right side, Watchilla got off a hard shot into the cage for her second goal of the game.

The loss was the first of the season for the Lady Warriors and allowed the five-time defending champion Blue Knights to climb back into a tie for first place in the division race in their first WVC outing since having a series of lengthy streaks broken.

A 1-0 loss to Lake-Lehman last week ended a streak in which Wyoming Seminary was 67-0-1 in WVC games with the only tie coming against Wyoming Area.

Wyoming Seminary is 7-1 in the division and 11-3 overall.

Wyoming Area, which earlier in the day had swapped places with Wyoming Seminary and taken over No. 1 in the Golden Dome Abstract Super Six Field Hockey Power Rankings of District 2 teams, is 7-1 and 14-1.

Izzy Pisano scored on a penalty corner, off an Ella Barbacci assist, with time expired in the first quarter to open the scoring.

Watchilla converted a penalty stroke 6:02 before halftime for a 2-0 lead that held up into the fourth quarter.

Wyoming Area scored twice off penalty corners in the fourth quarter.

Lyla Rehill scored, with an assist from Alexys Moore, 1:09 into the quarter.

Bianca Pizano forced overtime with a goal on an extended corner with no time remaining.

Wyoming Area led in penalty corners, 16-9, and shots, 10-7.

No. 3 Lake-Lehman moved to within a half-game of the lead, improving to 6-1 and 11-2 with a 1-0 shutout of host Crestwood, the No. 4 team.
