PLYMOUTH – Wyoming Valley Conference football coaches and several top players from each team took a break from the heat of opening week practice Thursday to gather for Media Day at Wyoming Valley West High School.
Players and coaches took part in photo sessions and media interviews along with having lunch together.
Wyoming Area’s Randy Spencer, the conference’s representative to the Pennsylvania State High School Football Coaches Association, addressed the group on the fourth day of heat acclimatization practices as they get ready to move into Monday’s step to full-contact practices and full equipment.
“We want to wish everybody a safe and successful season,” Spencer said as teams prepared to return to the challenge of workouts in a hot and humid week. “For the first time in a long time, we had a true heat acclimatization week. I know we’ve all been going through it together.
“A lot of guys are on turf where it’s super hot, but it’s been hot for everybody, grass or turf.”
The week hopefully served its purpose for getting teams ready for the work ahead.
“Weather’s breaking for us a little bit, so hopefully, looking ahead a little, we’re going to have a great week weather-wise as we get prepared for that first scrimmage we all have next Saturday,” Spencer said.
The conference’s 14 teams are split into divisions this season.
Berwick, Crestwood Dallas, Hazleton Area, Wilkes-Barre Area, Wyoming Valley West and District 4 member Williamsport are part of Division 1. Williamsport is a WVC team for football only.
Hanover Area, Holy Redeemer, Lake-Lehman, Nanticoke, Pittston Area, Tunkhannock and Wyoming Area make up Division 2.
The regular-season schedule begins Aug. 26.
