Crestwood pulled out victories in two of the three longest matches Thursday to hand Dallas its first Wyoming Valley Conference girls tennis defeat, 3-2.
Third singles player Ella Richards and the second doubles team of Julia Glowacki-Olivia Jardine provided the clutch points that combined with first singles player Hannah Ziegler to produce the victory.
Crestwood, which entered the match as the No. 6 Big School in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Girls Tennis Rankings of District 2 teams, improved to 3-1.
Dallas, the No. 3 Small School, dropped to 5-1.
Ziegler defeated Dani Konnick, 6-3, 7-5, at first singles.
Dallas got points at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Sophia DePolo defeated Camerone Carlos, 6-1, 6-1. Chloe-Dudik-Abby Quinnan defeated Madison Van Gorden-Samantha Olszyk, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.
Richards defeated Haily Yakus in a second-set tiebreaker to close out the win, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Glowacki-Jardine pulled out a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-4 victory over Hayla Brayant-Madison Kesderski.
In other WVC matches: Wyoming Area defeated Holy Redeemer, 4-1; Berwick edged Pittston Area, 3-2; Hanover Area shut out Wilkes-Barre Area, 5-0; and Tunkhannock beat MMI Prep, 4-1.
Ava Vacula won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for Wyoming Area.
Jocelyn Williams and Ella Rau-Morgan Slusser also won in straight sets.
Wallenpaupack edged Delaware Valley, 3-2, in a Lackawanna League match between ranked teams.
The other Lackawanna matches all ended in 5-0 shutouts: Abington Heights over Dunmore; Scranton Prep over Mid Valley; Scranton over Holy Cross and Valley View over Honesdale.
Abington Heights and Scranton Prep each remained undefeated.
BOYS GOLF
Lackawanna Trail edged Montrose, 5-4, in a meeting of ranked teams in a Lackawanna League Class 2A Division match.
Gavin Jones and Cole Schirg swept three points in the first foursome where Schirg won the first five holes in singles.
All three points in the middle foursome went down to the final hole with Lorenzo Domiano securing a singles point and joining Brayden Jones for a better-ball victory.
In other Lackawanna Class 2A matches: unbeaten Scranton Prep battled past Mid Valley 5½-3½; Western Wayne defeated Old Forge, 7-2; Riverside defeated Mountain View, 7 ½-1 ½; and Blue Ridge handled Elk Lake, 8-1, in Lackawanna Class 2A Division matches.
Valley View and Honesdale played to a 4½-4½ tie in the Lackawanna League Class 3A Division.
Scranton defeated West Scranton, 6-3, and Wallenpaupack owned Delaware Valley, 7½-1½, in other Class 3A Division matches.
Wyoming Area picked up two Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A Division matches, beating Dallas, 164-166, and Tunkhannock, 166-168, behind a 39 by Brady Noone at Fox Hill Country Club.
Pittston Area beat Wyoming Valley West, 162-189, and Hazleton Area defeated Wilkes-Barre Area, 165-181, in other WVC Class 3A matches.
Patrick Ruane shot an even-par, 36 at Wyoming Valley Country Club to lead Pittston Area.
Gabe Fatula shot 2-over, 37 for Hazleton Area at Valley Country Club.
Nick Werner’s 2-under-par, 33 led Wyoming Seminary past Hanover Area, 168-222, in a WVC Class 2A match at Wyoming Valley CC.
Holy Redeemer also beat Hanover Area, 173-222.
FIELD HOCKEY
Pittston Area, last year’s second-place team, opened the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 season by beating defending champion Wallenpaupack, 1-0, on Allison Kipp’s fourth-quarter goal.
Madison Zalewski scored for Abington Heights in a 1-0 victory at Tunkhannock.
In other WVC Division 2 games: Nanticoke defeated Berwick, 13-1, and Holy Redeemer shut out Hanover Area, 2-0.
Grace Reed scored six goals for Nanticoke.
Hazleton Area blanked Bethlehem Liberty, 1-0, in a non-league game.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Emma Rinaldi had six kills, six blocks and seven service points as Pittston Area outlasted Crestwood, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 13-25, 15-11, in a Wyoming Valley Conference match.
Delaware Valley and Berwick swept Nanticoke and Hanover Area in other WVC matches.
Lea Weinreb had 17 service points, 6 aces and 12 digs in Delaware Valley’s 25-14, 25-6, 25-5 romp.
Cece Isenberg had 11 aces and 8 kills for Berwick in its 25-12, 25-6, 25-7 rout.
Lackawanna League Division 1 leader Blue Ridge defeated defending Western Wayne in four sets.
Foxlynn King had 10 kills for Blue Ridge in the 22-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-18 victory.
Montrose also needed four sets to defeat Forest City.
The other three Lackawanna matches were three-set sweeps by North Pocono over Dunmore, Susquehanna over Elk Lake and Lackawanna Trail over Mountain View.
