Luke Janiszewski accounted for 260 all-purpose yards and 20 points Friday night along with scoring the game-winning touchdown as Western Wayne defeated visiting Abington Heights, 28-21, in a non-league game between Lackawanna Football Conference members.
Janiszewski’s two short touchdown runs gave Western Wayne a 14-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game.
Abington Heights rallied for a 21-14 lead in the fourth quarter, but Janiszewski completed the comeback with a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Western Wayne improved to 3-1 with the win while Abington Heights remained winless.
Janiszewski, a 6-foot, 205-pound, senior running back, linebacker and return man provided a bit of everything to the victory.
On offense, Janiszewski carried 23 times for 160 yards and his 2 touchdowns, along with running for two points after his interception return. He led the team in receiving with 3 catches for 32 yards.
Janiszewski’s defensive effort went beyond the pick six. He led the team in tackles with four tackles, including two for losses, and four assists, including one on a sack.
On special teams, Janiszewski also contributed 19- and 17-yard kickoff returns.
Western Wayne struck quickly, pairing touchdowns together in the first and fourth quarters.
Ethan Grodack’s interception and 11-yard return led to Janiszewski’s first touchdown, then an Alex Lucke recovery when Abington Heights could not handle the kickoff led to the second score.
Abington Heights cut into the deficit before the first quarter was over when kicker Michael Hartshorn picked up a bad snap on a planned field goal attempt and got to the right corner for a touchdown.
The Comets closed to within 14-13 at halftime on a Shawn Theodore quarterback sneak.
Theodore’s touchdown pass to Nico Bossi early in the fourth quarter and his pass to Mason Fedor for the two-pointer gave the Comets their 21-14 lead.
Josh Vinton ran for a touchdown for Western Wayne, but the Wildcats missed the tying extra point.
Western Wayne outrushed Abington Heights, 213-48, but the Comets outgained the Wildcats through the air, 187-39.
Theodore was 11-for-23 for 163 yards.
Fedor had 4 catches for 76 yards and Jack Burke had 3 for 61 yards.
