Alyssa Wigley and Emma Cuck won singles matches and Scranton Prep swept doubles Tuesday afternoon to defeat visiting Abington Heights, 4-1, in the match that is likely to decide the Lackawanna League girls tennis title.
The teams went into the match with 12-0 records and tied for first place, their usual position going into their annual meetings.
Scranton Prep won each of its four points in straight sets to end a 27-match league winning streak by the 2021 champions. The Classics are scheduled to face Holy Cross and Western Wayne Wednesday as a prohibitive favorite where a sweep would complete an unbeaten, championship season.
Wigley defeated Susan Arp, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.
Cuck downed Sona Hanumali, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
Annie Johnson-Gisele Falzone defeated Hanna Adonizio-Faith Bennett, 7-5, 6-2, and Grace Devine-Ella Cohen topped Mary Booth-Bernie Mullin, 6-4, 6-3, at first and second doubles.
The only Abington Heights point came at second singles where Rina Hanumali defeated Leelah Farrell, 6-4, 6-0.
The championship was the 10th in 13 years for Scranton Prep.
The Classics won a division title in 2009. The next two years, Scranton Prep and Abington Heights won the two divisions.
In the one-league format being used again now, Abington Heights and Scranton Prep alternated titles from 2012 through 2015.
The league named champions by class in 2016, but also had an overall championship match in which Scranton Prep defeated Wallenpaupack, the only time in the last 13 years that the Classics and Comets were not the league’s top two teams.
The rivals won the two division titles in 2017 before the league returned to putting all teams together. Abington Heights won in 2018 and last year with Scranton Prep winning in 2019 and 2020.
