Top seeds Susan Arp from Abington Heights and Alana Rosenthal from Wyoming Seminary advanced to the semifinals of the District 2 girls tennis singles tournament where each is joined by a teammate.
Scranton Prep also landed two semifinalists when Leelah Farrell was one of three players to produce mild upsets, according to seeds, during Monday’s action to begin the tournament.
There were three rounds, plus preliminary match, needed to go from 33 players to 4 in Class 3A at Kirby Park. In Class 2A, nearly half the field had byes in the first round before two full rounds of action on the Wilkes University courts completed the process of trimming 22 players down to 4.
The tournament concludes with two rounds Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m. at the TK Tennis Academy in Kingston. The decision was made to move the tournament away from Kirby Park and to an indoor facility Tuesday morning because of cold weather.
Crestwood’s Hannah Ziegler and Scranton’s Maia Philbin, who each beat higher-seeded quarterfinal opponents in Class 3A, join the six players from the powerhouse programs that combined to lose just once in the regular season and once more in the team playoffs that were conducted last week.
The top two singles players from Wyoming Seminary and Scranton Prep are in the Class 2A semifinals, but their matchups are the opposite of last week’s team tournament when Wyoming Seminary had the advantage at those spots but Scranton Prep won the match, 3-1.
Farrell will play top-seeded Ilana Rosenthal while teammate Alyssa Wigley, the second seed, plays Victoria Martinez.
Arp and teammate Rina Hanumali, last year’s district doubles champions, ae the top seeds in Class 3A. Arp will face Ziegler while Hanumali plays Philbin.
Rosenthal, a finalist last year, won all six of her sets, 6-0, 6-0, to get to the semifinals.
Wigley made it to her last set of the day before dropping one game.
Martinez lost just three games in six sets.
Farrell, the fifth seed, defeated Riverside’s Bella Aniska, part of the district’s 2A championship doubles team last season, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Arp won all but four games in four sets while Hanumali won all but five.
Ziegler won the day’s best match, beating fourth-seeded Gabrielle Chantiloupe from West Scranton, 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 7-5.
Philbin, the sixth seed, beat third-seeded Ericka Badner from Wallenpaupack, 6-3, 6-4.
