The Wallenpaupack and Western Wayne girls basketball teams dominated defensively in the first halves Wednesday while beating their neighbors during the final night of the Honesdale Jaycees Tournament.
Both the Lady Buckhorns and Lady Wildcats held their opponents to two points in the first quarter and four in the first half.
Wallenpaupack won its second tournament title of the season, handling Honesdale, 44-19, in the championship game.
Western Wayne took third place with a 46-13 victory over Forest City.
Wallenpaupack 44, Honesdale 19
Tournament Most Valuable Player Grace Steffen led a 21-2 first quarter and finished with a game-high 13 points for Wallenpaupack.
Steffen went 5-for-6 from the line while scoring seven points in the first quarter. She finished 7-for-8 on free throws.
Aviona Rosenthal hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter.
Erika Badner, who had five of her eight points, and Ella Smith, also had 3-pointers during the big start.
Wallenpaupack led 30-4 at halftime.
Smith, a member of the all-tournament team, finished with 11 points.
Claire Campen, Honesdale’s all-tournament selection, and Ruby Martin each had four points for the Lady Hornets.
Campen had the team’s only first-quarter basket. Martin had the only basket of the second quarter.
Wallenpaupack, which improved to 6-2, had opened the season by winning the Lake Region Tip-Off Tournament on its home court.
Western Wayne 46, Forest City 13
All-tournament pick Raegan Palmer scored 16 points to lead Western Wayne to the win in the consolation game.
Palmer had six points in each of the first two quarters as the Lady ‘Cats took leads of 19-2 after one quarter and 35-4 at halftime.
Klhoe Mistishin added 11 points.
Allie Pauler had all six of her points in the first quarter.
Kim Graham led Forest City with five points.
Lily Zukosky made the all-tournament team for the Lady Foresters.
