Jacob Palermo shot 36 at Berwick Golf Club Friday as Hazleton Area officially locked up its Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 golf championship with a 170-189 victory over Berwick.
The Cougars are 8-0 in the WVC with two matches remaining.
Second-place Crestwood is 6-3 and unable to catch Hazleton Area despite Friday’s 158-187 victory over Wyoming Valley West.
Jonathan Joseph added a 38 for Hazleton Area in the clincher.
Owen Blazick shot 2-over-par, 38 at Irem Temple Country Club to lead Crestwood’s win.
Derek Johnson and Isaac Saullo added 39s.
Mike Koval led Wyoming Valley West with a 42.
Hanover Area picked up a pair of WVC Division 3 victories, beating Wyoming Seminary, 158-174, and MMI Prep, 158-188.
North Pocono defeated Honesdale, 7-2, in Lackawanna League Division 1.
Montrose shut out Mountain View, 9-0, and Forest City edged Elk Lake, 5-4, in Lackawanna 3 matches.
Abington Heights, the second-place team in Lackawanna Division 1, defeated Lackawanna Division 2 champion Riverside, 6-3, in a non-league match.
GIRLS TENNIS
On a day when the other four WVC matches were decided in 5-0 shutouts, Hanover Area got past Pittston Area, 3-2.
Madison Elick and Maggie Murphy recovered from losing the first set, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles to take the last two sets, 6-0, 6-0 and help the Lady Hawkeyes overcome giving away a point by forfeit at No. 2 doubles.
Karlee Yuscavage and Stephanie Lewis won in straight sets in the first two singles spots.
Quinn Carden took third singles in straight sets for Pittston Area’s other point.
The other wins were by Crestwood over Wyoming Area, Wyoming Seminary over Wilkes-Barre Area, Holy Redeemer over Hazleton Area and Berwick over Wyoming Valley West.
Hannah Ziegler won, 6-0, 6-0, for Crestwood at first singles.
Megan McLaughlin, Shannon Griffiths, Olivia Richards-Sydney Bruno and Sam Olszyk-Madison Van Gorden also won in straight sets.
Unbeaten Wyoming Seminary picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins from Ilana Rosenthal, Ella Krypel and Bridget Dowd in each singles match and received forfeits in doubles.
Carissa Benderavich won, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles for Holy Redeemer, which won the remaining matches in straight sets.
Piper Mensinger won, 6-1, 6-0, at first singles for Berwick, which lost just 11 games in 12 sets.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Skylar Long had 20 service points and 6 aces as Western Wayne swept Elk Lake in three sets in a Lackawanna Division 1-2 crossover.
Kaeli Romanowski had 12 points and 3 kills.
Katherine Shepherd, who had six kills, and Jaque Morris had three aces each.
In the other Lackawanna match, Mountain View needed five sets to get past Lackawanna Trail.
