Abington Heights overcame a 1-2 finish by Scranton’s Bella Noreika and Emily Hopkins to remain unbeaten in Lackawanna League girls cross country with a 27-30 victory Tuesday at Nay Aug Park.
The efforts of Noreika and Hopkins put Scranton in close meets with three of the Lackawanna’s other top teams. The Lady Knights defeated Valley View, 28-29, but lost to North Pocono on the sixth-runner tiebreaker after they wound up at 28-28.
Abington Heights improved to 17-0. Scranton, which came into the meet with just one loss, dropped to 14-3, the same record as Valley View. North Pocono is 13-4.
North Pocono joined Abington Heights in going 3-0 on the day by also beating West Scranton and Mid Valley.
The most possible sweeps on a full league day are 12 and the league wound up with 9 Tuesday.
Host Honesdale, Wallenpaupack and Delaware Valley all swept the combination of Lakeland, Lackawanna Trail and Western Wayne.
Montrose, Blue Ridge and host Elk Lake did the same against the combination of Dunmore, Riverside and Old Forge.
Scranton Prep also had a sweep.
North Pocono’s Emily Franklin and Valley View’s Kaitlyn Newberry were third and fourth at Nay Aug before Gianna Sabatini led the Abington Heights combination.
Sabatini was fifth and Maia Arcangelo and Emma Horsley were seventh and eighth, just behind Mid Valley’s Annika VonAhnen in sixth.
Brenna Dahlgren won on her home course to lead Honesdale to sweep its meets by at least 20 points each. She received support from Kira Fox in fifth and Megan Kretschmer in seventh.
Western Wayne’s Madison Kammer was second, Delaware Valley’s Kaya Meier third and Wallenpaupack’s Morgan Anderson fourth.
Morgan Lutz was sixth to lead Lakeland.
Montrose placed five runners in the top 10 and Elk Lake three, led by winner Krista Jones, in their meet.
Daegan Giannone was third, Paige Brewer fourth, Stephanie Summerville sixth, Annika Bixby ninth and Mary Pichette 10th for Montrose.
Makayla Wagner was fifth and Sidney Upright eighth for Elk Lake.
Riverside’s Lacey Danilovitz was second and Blue Ridge’s Emma Piechocki eighth.
Katy and Rachel Korty were first and fourth for Forest City at McDade Park.
Jenna Hildebrand was second for Scranton Prep.
Carissa Flynn was third and Kathryn Long fifth for Mountain View, which edged Holy Cross, 28-29, to prevent the Lady Crusaders from joining the list of teams that swept.
Kaitlyn Farrell was sixth for Holy Cross, which went 2-1 on the day.
Scranton Prep’s Riley Matasavage and Carly Schofield were seventh and eighth before two more Holy Cross runners, Abby Thompson and Julie Walsh, rounded out the top 10.
