The top performances in District 2 sports from the week of Dec. 27-Jan. 2:
MATT MOWRY, Elk Lake boys basketball
Mowry had 32 points, 10 rebounds, 7 steals and 4 assists while earning his team’s Most Valuable Player award in a 57-41 victory at Carbondale in the Michael “Red” Wallace Memorial Scholarship Game.
MORIAH MURRAY, Dunmore girls basketball
Murray hit eight 3-pointers while scoring 37 points when the Lady Bucks won the Lynett Memorial Tournament with a pair of routs. She had 5 of the 3-pointers and 20 of the points in a 65-30 romp over previously unbeaten Scranton in the semifinals. Murray also had four assists, two steals and two blocked shots in that game. She went 6-for-10 from the floor with a game-high 17 points in the championship game against Scranton Prep.
KAELI ROMANOWSKI, Western Wayne girls basketball
Romanowski scored 46 points in 2 games and was named tournament Most Valuable Player when Western Wayne won the Honesdale Jaycees Tournament with 2 wins by a total of 56 points.
JASON SHIELDS, Scranton boys basketball
Shields was named MVP of the Lynett Memorial Tournament after posting a triple-double in the semifinal and scoring a game-high 20 points in a 50-46 victory over Scranton Prep in the final. His triple double in the 71-60 victory over Dunmore consisted of 19 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.
LUKE SIRIANNI, Abington Heights wrestling
Sirianni won five times in two days to take the 113-pound title while helping the Comets run away with the championship in the 22-team field at the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament. Sirianni won by four first-period pins, one of them over a District 11 silver medalist in the final, and a technical fall. The 2011 District 2 champion, Northeast Regional runner-up and state sixth-place finisher improved to 14-0 with the performance.
CIERA TOOMEY, Dunmore girls basketball
Toomey was the Lynett Tournament MVP after scoring 45 points in two games. She was 13-for-15 from the floor, 3-for-4 on 3-pointers and 1-for-1 at the line while scoring 30 in a victory over Scranton in the first round. Toomey followed it up with 15 points and her second straight 9-rebound game in a 46-17 romp over Scranton Prep in the final.
CONNOR WROBLESKI, Wyoming Area wrestling
Wrobleski destroyed the 189-pound field in the Tunkhannock Winter Invitational Scuffle, a two-day, full round-robin event. Wrobleski went 9-0 for the event with eight first-period pins, including one that produced the 100th win of his career. The three-time District 2 Class 2A champion came out of the two days with a 22-0 season record.
