Yoshi Matsui scored twice and Philip Sykes made 17 saves Tuesday as Abington Heights handed North Pocono its first defeat, 3-1, in a Lackawanna League Division 1 boys soccer game.
North Pocono entered the game as the top-ranked Big School boys team in the Riverfront United Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
The Trojans had advantages of 29-11 in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks, but Sykes allowed only a penalty kick goal by Jonah Yurkanin, after the Comets already had completed their scoring.
Matsui converted a Ryan Salony assist just 2:45 into the game to open the scoring.
Rob Saunders scored on a penalty kick 6:12 before halftime.
Yoshi then scored off a Nate Steenback assist 1:03 into the second half.
Yurkanin’s goal came 2:16 later, but it was the only one Sykes allowed.
In other Division 1 games: Wallenpaupack defeated Honesdale, 5-1, and Valley View shut out Scranton Prep, 2-0.
The results left Valley View alone in first at 3-0 in the division with Abington Heights, North Pocono and Wallenpaupack all a game back at 2-1.
Tommy Clark scored five goals to lead Dunmore past Forest City, 9-1, in Lackawanna Division 2.
Ashton Fitzsimmons had four for Western Wayne in a 5-2 victory over Lakeland.
Mountain View edged Gregory the Great Academy, 3-2, on Nathan Ofalt’s second goal of the game.
In Lackawanna Division 3 games: Old Forge defeated Blue Ridge, 4-2; Elk Lake shut out Riverside, 3-0; and West Scranton blanked Montrose, 6-0.
Aaron Gorka scored the game’s only goal in the first half and Cole Kranson made six saves to lead Crestwood’s 1-0 victory over Tunkhannock in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 game.
Hazleton Area overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to defeat Wyoming Valley West, 3-2, on goals by Angelo Paniagua, Gavin Huey and Michael Bellas.
Wilkes-Barre Area defeated Berwick, 5-3.
