Comets, Lions take wrestling titles

Abington Heights and Lackawanna Trail held up their top seeds, winning on their home mats Saturday to capture District 2 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships.

Both teams repeated victories over the opponents that finished second to them in the Lackawanna League divisional standings where each also won championships.

Abington Heights widened the gap on Delaware Valley while dethroning the Warriors, 44-27, in Class 3A.

Lackawanna Trail repeated its Class 2A title by downing Honesdale, 49-12.

Austin Smith got Abington Heights off to a flying start when he built a 10-0 lead in the opening 145-pound bout before winning by pin midway through the second period.

Sal Schiavone’s 22-second pin at 160 put the Comets ahead to stay and Caleb Marzolino needed just 56 seconds to add a pin at 172.

John Gorrick also won in less than a minute, scoring a pin in 51 seconds at 285.

Following Gorrick, Luke Sirianni won by technical fall at 106 and Brady Kareha scored the first three points and held on for a 3-2 decision at 113 to open the lead to 38-9 and clinch the victory.

Tomas Delos Rios added a second-period pin at 25 and Brian Heard finished up with a first-period pin at 138.

Zac Jacaruso’s 48-second pin at 120 was the most decisive win for Delaware Valley.

Lackawanna Trail won the first 10 bouts, clinching in 8 by building a 36-0 lead, which grew to 46-0 before Honesdale won two of the final three bouts.

Deegan Ross (152) and Jonah Houser (285) won first-period pins for the Lions. Michael Bluhm (145), Robbie Schneider (170) and Brayden Clarke (106) also won by pin.

Cole Henry won a major decision at 113.

Max Bluhm opened with a decision at 138, then Tyler Rozanski, Seth Ross and Mason Zacjac won three straight decisions by a total of 12 points to keep Lackawanna Trail rolling.

Ethan Lee finished up with a 1-0 decision at 132.
