Dallas opens season ranked first

The Dallas Mountaineers, defending champions of the Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2 Class 2A, open the season as the top-ranked team in the Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Boys Tennis Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Dallas finished last season ranked first after going unbeaten into the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 2A state tournament following a first-round win.

The Mountaineers are one of two teams in the first Elite Eight of the season that have not yet opened their seasons.

Last season’s other two championship teams begin this season ranked second and third.

Abington Heights, which won the District 2 Class 3A season, has the best record in the district so far this season with three straight 5-0 victories and is ranked second.

Scranton Prep, the defending Lackawanna League champion, is third.

Wyoming Seminary and Valley View, which finished last season in the bottom two spots in the rankings, are fourth and fifth.

West Scranton, Holy Redeemer and MMI Prep, unranked at the end of last season, complete the rankings.

West Scranton is 2-1, including avenging its District 2 Class 3A quarterfinal loss from last season by beating North Pocono, 3-2.

Holy Redeemer has not yet opened its season.

MMI Prep won its only match, beating Crestwood, a District 2 Class 3A finalist last season.

Crestwood, Dunmore and Honesdale were ranked at the end of last season but are a combined 1-5 this season and are not part of the initial rankings.
