District 2 recap – Tuesday, 4/18

MAIN EVENT

Berwick swept host Holy Redeemer, which came into the Wyoming Valley Conference boys volleyball match unbeaten.

TOP PERFORMERS

Brett Antolick, Hazleton Area baseball – Texas A&M commit Antolick fired a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks, making a run in the top of the first inning hold up for a 1-0, Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 victory over Wyoming Valley West.

Makenna Balay, Hazleton Area softball – Balay went 4-for-4 with a home run and seven RBI in a 20-5, three-inning rout of Berwick in WVC Division 1.

John Cummings, Dallas boys track and field – Cummings won the shot put and discus and was part of the wins in the 400- and 1600-meter relays during a 116-34 victory over Wyoming Valley West in a WVC Division 1 meet.

Emily Franklin, North Pocono, girls track and field – Franklin won the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs to lead a 104-46 victory over Honesdale in a Lackawanna Track Conference Division 2 meet.

Julia Glowacki, Crestwood girls lacrosse – Glowacki scored four goals and assisted on five more in an 18-6 romp over Wilkes-Barre Area in a WVC game.

Jack Herron, Wyoming Seminary boys lacrosse – Herron scored eight goals and assisted on four in an 18-6 WVC victory over Tunkhannock.

Alan Lisman, Dallas boys volleyball – Lisman had 22 kills and 19 digs as the Mountaineers swept rival Lake-Lehman, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23, in a WVC match.

Joe Peters, Dallas baseball – Leadoff hitter Joe Peters homered, singled, drove in five runs and scored twice as the Mountaineers defeated Pittston Area, 13-9, in a battle for second place in WVC Division 1. He helped Dallas build a 12-0 lead after 3½ innings.

KEY CONTRIBUTORS

Xavier Beaulac, Wyoming Seminary boys lacrosse – Beaulac had six assists and scored a goal in the win over Tunkhannock.

Madison Forsythe, Hazleton Area softball – Forsythe was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI in the romp over Berwick.

Zach Paczewski, Dallas baseball – Paczewski went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI in the victory over Pittston Area.

TOP DEVELOPMENTS

Carbondale remained undefeated in Lackawanna Division 3 baseball by withstanding a challenge from third-place Blue Ridge, 4-3.

Sprinter Trinity Basara and distance runner Madison Hedglin each ran to two wins and anchored a winning relay as Dallas, the top-ranked Big School girls team in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Track and Field Power Rankings of District 2 teams, finally opened its WVC Division 1 schedule with a 119-31 romp over Wyoming Valley West.

QUICK HITS

Hanover Area defeated Wyoming Seminary, 14-11, in WVC Division 2 softball despite trailing 6-0 after 1½ innings and 8-1 after 3½.

West Scranton pulled out a 74½-71½ LTC Division 1 victory over Scranton while Scranton won the boys meet easily, 106-44.

Brady Holmes scored five goals while Will McGrath and Liam Barrett added four each as Scranton Prep routed Wyoming Area, 20-1, in WVC boys lacrosse.

BY THE NUMBERS

Crestwood had nine different boys win individual events, used eight different boys runners on two winning relays, got individual wins from eight girls and had nine girls win at least one relay.

The Comets used that depth to handle Pittston Area in a pair of WVC Division 1 track and field meets. The boys won, 91-57, and the girls won, 105-45.
