Pittston Area, Wallenpaupack and Abington Heights took different routes to wins Wednesday when the Wyoming Valley Conference field hockey season opened with three Division 2 games.
Pittston Area never trailed, but could not break away from Tunkhannock in a 3-2, home-field victory.
Wallenpaupack spotted host Nanticoke a three-goal, first-quarter lead before recovering to open its title defense with a 6-4 victory.
Abington Heights also won on the road, returning to league play after a year away as part of the school’s COVID-19 policy, overpowering Berwick, 8-0.
All three teams won for the first team this season. Pittston Area had lost twice while the others lost once each in non-leaguers before the WVC season started.
Morgan Hilbert scored one goal and assisted the other two for Pittston Area, which tied for first in the standings last season before losing a playoff to Wallenpaupack.
Marygrace Sabatini had a hat trick to lead the Abington Heights offense.
Wilkes-Barre Area and Dallas, which will play later this season in a Division 1 game, met in non-league play and wound up in a 1-1 tie after overtime.
