Hazleton Area finished an unbeaten regular season, locked up the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 title and made one of just two upward moves in this week’s Scranton Golf Center Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
Pittston Area rejoined the rankings, which were released Thursday based on regular-season results, which are complete for most teams.
Hazleton Area, the district’s only Class 3A team to have an unbeaten regular season, moved up for the second straight week. The Cougars moved into second among Big Schools behind defending district champion Abington Heights.
Three teams finished unbeaten overall in their regular seasons.
Lackawanna League Division 1 champion Scranton Prep and WVC Division 3 champion Lake-Lehman remained 1-2 in the Small Schools. Each has held the No. 1 spot at times in unbeaten seasons that have included under-par finishes, not just by their top players, but by the teams as a whole.
Hazleton Area takes over second from North Pocono, which slips one spot to third after losing to Abington Heights for the second time this season.
WVC Division 1 champion Dallas and Crestwood remain fourth and fifth for the second straight week.
Pittston Area used two wins to replace Honesdale, which lost three straight, in sixth.
The Small School rankings remained the same.
Scranton Prep and Lake-Lehman are followed by Hanover Area, which has lost only to Lake-Lehman.
The Lackawanna’s other three division champions – Riverside, Montrose and Lackawanna Trail occupy the fourth, fifth and sixth spots.
The ranked Small Schools combined to go 16-1 on the week with the only loss coming when Riverside fell to Big School No. 1 Abington Heights, 6-3, in a non-league match.
