Hazleton Area used straight-set wins at first and second singles as well as first doubles Monday afternoon to defeat host Pittston Area, 3-0, in the opener to the girls tennis season in District 2.
The remainder of the match was rained out, but the outcome was already decided, making it official. The rest of the Opening Day Wyoming Valley Conference schedule was postponed because of weather.
Pittston Area had won a set in each of the two matches that still needed to be decided.
Jasmine Van Camp defeated Quinn Carden at first singles and Emily Prokopovich defeated Megan Kapacs at second singles, both by 6-1, 6-1 scores.
Jenna Harmanosky and Katy Harmanosky defeated Katie Koss and Laura Farber, 6-2, 6-1, at first doubles.
The third singles match between Pittston Area’s Bethany Yashkus and Hazleton Area’s Nanci Major was tied in the third set when the rain came. Major took the first set, 7-5; Yashkus won the second, 6-2; and the third set was tied, 1-1.
Pittston Area’s Jayda Eike-Ayla Krieger defeated Michelle Zupcevic/Ava Zions-Smith, 6-2, in the first set of the second doubles match.
